چکیده

The orbital period evolution of X-ray binaries provides fundamental clues to understanding mechanisms of angular momentum loss from these systems. We present an X-ray eclipse timing analysis of the transient low mass X-ray binary AX J1745.6-2901. This system shows full eclipses and thus is one of the few objects for which accurate orbital evolution studies using this method can be carried out. We report on XMM-Newton and ASCA observations covering 30 complete X-ray eclipses spanning an interval of more than 20 years. We improve the determination of the orbital period to a relative precision of 2 × 10, two orders of magnitudes better than previous estimates. We determine, for the first time, a highly significant rate of decrease of the orbital period Ṗorb = −4.03 ± 0.32 × 10 s/s. This is at least one order of magnitude larger than expected from conservative mass transfer and angular momentum losses due to gravitational waves and magnetic breaking, and might result from non-conservative mass transfer. Imprinted on the long term evolution of the orbit, we observe highly significant eclipse leads-delays of ∼ 10 − 20 s, characterised by a clear state dependence in which, on average, eclipses occur earlier during the hard state.

X-Ray Eclipse Timing in the LMXB EXO0748-676

Orbital period changes are an important diagnostic for understanding low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) accretioninduced angular momentum exchange and overall system evolution. We present our most recent results for the eclipse timing of the LMXB EXO 0748−676. Since its discovery in 1985 it has apparently undergone three distinct orbital period “epochs", each characterized by a different orbital peri...

Timing and Spectral Study of AXJ1745.6–2901 with Suzaku

The eclipsing low-mass X-ray binary AX J1745.6–2901 was observed with Suzaku in its outburst phase. Combining the Chandra observation made 1.5 month earlier than Suzaku, the orbital period is determined to be 30063.76±0.14 s. We found deep flux dips prior to the eclipse phase of orbit. The X-ray spectrum in the persistent phase is described with a combination of a direct and a scattered-in by d...

A Chandra X-ray Study of the Dense Globular Cluster Terzan 5

We report a Chandra ACIS-I observation of the dense globular cluster Terzan 5. The previously known transient low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) EXO 1745 248 in the cluster entered a rare high state during our 2000 August observation, complicating the analysis. Nevertheless, nine additional sources clearly associated with the cluster are also detected, ranging from LXð0:5 2:5 keVÞ 1⁄4 5:6 1032 down t...

Eclipse Timings of the Low Mass X-ray Binary EXO 0748–676 III. An Apparent Orbital Period Glitch Observed with USA and RXTE

We present 7 eclipse timings of the low mass X-ray binary EXO0748−676 obtained with the USA experiment during 1999−2000 as well as 122 eclipse timings obtained with RXTE during 1996−2000. According to our analysis, the mean orbital period has increased by ∼ 8 ms between the pre-RXTE era (1985−1990) and the RXTE/USA era (1996−2000). This corresponds to an orbital period derivative of Porb/Ṗorb ∼...

We summarize the status of art of the secular evolution of low mass X–ray binaries (LMXBs) and take a close look at the orbital period distribution of LMXBs and of binary millisecond pulsars (MSP), in the hypothesis that this latter results from the LMXB evolution. The deficiency of systems below the period gap, which in cataclysmic binaries occurs between ∼ 2 and 3 hr, points to a very differe...
